As the French revolution approached, music became much more politicized than it had been under the Old Regime. During the revolution and early French republic, French citizens recognized that music could be politically useful for unification, but musical endeavors were so oppositional, divisive, and extreme that they were essentially unable to help maintain large-scale social order. However, during the Third Republic, owing to the influence of German musical pedagogy and culture, and a more intentional approach, republicans of this era were more effective in using music to promote cohesion among a diverse population.
