Laccase-like multi-copper oxidases (LMCOs) are enzymes that carry out the oxidation of a variety of compounds with concomitant reduction of oxygen to water. They have received attention for their ability to breakdown waste products from the textile and paper industries. Given their advantages as green catalysts, these enzymes have also been explored for redox reactions outside their natural scope. We are investigating the ability of a recently discovered LMCO from Paenibacillus glucanolyticus to catalyze redox reactions not known to occur in nature. This work will provide new chemical methodologies to access valuable compounds in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner.
