Current American Diabetes Association (ADA) guidelines recommendations for T2D screening do not include fasting insulin (FI) testing which potentially could predict 5-year risk of developing T2D. This retrospective cohort study utilizes data from the CARDIA study to investigate the five-year risk of developing T2D by utilizing FI following ADA’s guidelines for diabetes screening. In pre-diabetic groups, the use of insulin quartiles identified significant differences in 5-year risk of T2D. Analysis of the CARDIA study found a statistically significant correlation between the highest insulin quartile and 5-year risk of T2D in pre-diabetics.
